Welcome to Royal Oak, Michigan! Founded in 1819,  is just 14 miles north of downtown Detroit and is full of life and character. The name "Royal Oak" comes from a beautiful oak tree that early settlers discovered, reminiscent of the famous Royal Oak in England, where King Charles II once found refuge.


Royal Oak really began to flourish in the early 20th century, thanks to the booming auto industry and the establishment of major roads like Woodward Avenue. This transformation turned Royal Oak into a bustling suburb with a rich history, making it a vibrant place to live.


Today, you’ll find a downtown filled with a great mix of restaurants, boutiques, and entertainment spots. Plus, the Detroit Zoo is right here, making it a favorite destination for both locals and visitors!

Built in 1845 by Orson Starr, this charming Greek Revival-style wooden frame house is the oldest home in Royal Oak. Orson was the town's first manufacturer and made cowbells, adding to the local character! You can find this lovely house at 3123 N Main Street, and it’s listed in Michigan’s State Register of Historic Sites, making it a special part of our community's history.as being designated as a historic district.

The George and Anna Hilzinger House, located at 211 Knowles Street in Royal Oak, Michigan, is a significant historic property. This New England Classic Cottage-style home was at 126 Phillips Street and relocated  in 1864by George and Anna Hilzinger in 1946 to make way for the Daily Tribune building.


George Hilzinger was a descendant of William Hilzinger, a prominent local entrepreneur involved in cobbling and the electric industry in the late 19th century. The Hilzinger family also operated Hilzinger Hardware, a well-known Royal Oak business throughout much of the 20th century.


This historic home exemplifies its era's architectural style and the dedication of its owners to preserving its legacy, reflecting the city's rich history and growth.

McDowell House

The McDowell House, located at 402 North Troy Street, is an important historic home in Royal Oak. Built in 1914, it showcases the style of early 20th-century design. Recently, builders teamed up with the Historical Society to carefully remodel and expand the house, making sure to keep its original charm. One unique feature of the property is the city’s only known barn, which now serves as a garage and has earned recognition from the Michigan Barn Preservation Network for its excellent upkeep.


These historic homes give us a glimpse into Royal Oak's past and highlight the city’s dedication to preserving its architectural and cultural heritage.

The city has over 51 parks, spread across more than 310 acres of beautiful woods and recreational spaces. There's something for everyone, with tons of amenities like playgrounds, tennis courts, frisbee golf courses, and sports fields. Check out some of the highlights:

  • Starr Jaycee Park: A 28-acre community space in Royal Oak, Michigan, offers diverse recreational amenities, including sports fields, playgrounds, fitness stations, and pavilions. Highlights include an 18-hole disc golf course, miniature train rides (May–October), and cultural events like Shakespeare in the Park, making it a vibrant hub for outdoor activities and entertainment.
  • Cummingston Park: A nice natural spot with peaceful walking trails.
  • Tenhave Woods in Quickstad Park: A great area for anyone who loves nature.
  • Memorial Park: Located at Woodward Avenue and Thirteen Mile Road, this park has three lit ball diamonds and snacks available.
  • Lawson Park: The park sits on 4.25 acres and has state-of-the-art playground equipment.
  • Mark Twain Dog Park:  (formerly ROAM) is a group committed to providing a safe and clean environment for dog owners. They promote a positive and healthy community experience for both dogs and their owners.

Royal Oak brings our community together and draws in visitors from all over! Here are some highlights:


  • 1Outdoor Art Fair: Join us in early July at Memorial Park for this wonderful juried fine art show, hosted by the Royal Oak Arts Council and Royal Oak Recreation. Stroll through a beautiful selection of artworks while enjoying live performances – it’s a feast for the senses!


  • Woodward Dream Cruise: Mark your calendars for the third Saturday in August! This amazing event is the world's largest one-day automotive gathering. Picture classic cars cruising along Woodward Avenue and over a million excited visitors and car enthusiasts soaking in the fun!


  • Arts, Beats & Eats: This beloved festival takes place over Labor Day weekend and is all about celebrating the arts, music, and delicious food from local vendors. Families will love the carnival and special entertainment just for kids – there’s something for everyone!


These events, along with many others, really showcase the vibrant spirit of Royal Oak, making it a wonderful place to live and visit all year round. We can’t wait to see you there!
