Hazel Park, also known as "The Friendly City," is a community in southeast Oakland County, just a quick drive from Detroit. It became a city back in 1941 and has an interesting history as a neighborhood that grew during the automotive boom in the early 1900s. Hazel Park residents really appreciate the small-town vibe.


These days, Hazel Park mixes suburban comfort with easy access to city life. There are loads of new businesses, restaurants, and community spaces popping up after some recent upgrades. Living in Hazel Park you'll find Green Acres Park is a local favorite for outdoor activities, and there are plenty of local events that bring everyone together.


With quick access to major highways, it’s easy to get to all the cultural and economic opportunities in Detroit.

Parks and Recreation

The city maintains several parks, each providing unique amenities:

  • Green Acres Park: Adjacent to the Recreation Center at 620 W. Woodward Heights, this park features sports fields, a recreation center, fitness areas, and a sledding hill. 


  • Scout Park: Located at E. Otis & Russell, Scout Park offers open spaces suitable for various recreational activities. 


  • BMX Course at Fuller Park: Located on Melville between Woodward Heights and Tucker, this BMX course offers an exciting outdoor space for biking enthusiasts. It’s designed for riders of all skill levels to enjoy jumps, turns, and obstacles in a safe, open environment.


  • Community Garden: Situated on Merrill between E. Eliza and E. Milton, the Hazel Park Community Garden provides a collaborative space for residents to grow fresh produce, flowers, and herbs. It promotes sustainability, healthy living, and community interaction.

  • Memorial Weekend Festival: This five-day festival includes a carnival, a refreshment tent with live music, baseball exhibition games, a car show, and bingo, culminating with the Memorial Day Parade.


  • Hazel Park Art Fair: A unique festival with an eye on benefiting thevcommunity we are a part
    of and enhancing the local quality of life for everyone involved.


  • Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony: Held in November at the Hazel Park Viking Ice Arena, the community gathers to welcome the holiday season and greet Santa. 


  • These events and various recreational programs offered throughout the year contribute to the city's community and provide residents with opportunities for engagement.

Hazel Park Dog Park

M-Th, 8:30am to 5:00pm. F, 9:00am to 1:00pm

The Hazel Park Dog Park is located just south of Karam Park. Parking is available off Couzens Ave. just north of the Dept. of Public Works complex (24211 Couzens Ave.).

A key for the Dog Park can be purchased at the City Clerk's Office (111 E. Nine Mile Rd.). Keys are valid until the end of the calendar year and cost $25 for Hazel Park residents ($40 for non-residents). Those purchasing a key for the Dog Park must have current City of Hazel Park pet licenses for each animal or, if a non-resident, provide proof of valid rabies vaccination.
